Professional Background
Abiodun Akinwuntan, Ph.D., MPH, MBA, MIH, FASAHP, FACRM, FAMedS, became the school's sixth dean in January 2016. He previously served as associate dean for research at the College of Allied Health Sciences at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia, where he was professor of physical therapy, ophthalmology and neurology.
Dean Akinwuntan received his bachelor's degree from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 1994, and master's and doctoral degrees in neurological rehabilitation from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven) in Belgium, in 2000 and 2004 respectively. He earned a postgraduate certificate in teaching and learning in higher education from the University of East London, England in 2005, and a master's degree in public health in 2012 followed by a master's degree in business administration in 2015 from Augusta University. Dean Akinwuntan recently completed a master's of international health degree from the Institute of International Medicine (2023).
Dean Akinwuntan received the prestigious United States Fulbright Scholarship to Nigeria in 2013 and Fulbright Specialist Award to Iceland in 2016. He is the editor in chief of The Nigerian Journal of Medical Rehabilitation, an academic editor of PLOS ONE Journal, member of the editorial board for the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Journal, and associate editor for Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. He is a member of the nomination and elections committee and chair of the research, discovery, and innovation committee of the Association of Schools Advancing the Health Professions. Akinwuntan is treasurer of the Midwest Deans Group and also a member of the association's 2018 leadership development program.
He was elected as a Fellow of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions in October 2020 in recognition of excellence in and contributions to education in the health professions. In September 2021, Akinwuntan received fellowship status in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Dean Akinwuntan currently serves on the board of directors of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions and the board of directors of the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research of the National Institutes of Health. In 2022 he was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria.
