Kari Nilsen

Research

Overview

Dr. Nilsen primarily helps medical student learners, resident-physicians, and both medical school and residency faculty in the designing, production, and dissemination of scholarly activity. This includes activity such as research studies, quality/performance improvement activities, journal articles, grants, presentations, posters, and case reports. Additionally, Dr. Nilsen is responsible for coordination of the HRSA-23-123 grant titled Preparing Physicians for Care of Individuals with Limited English Proficiency running through 2028.

Dr. Nilsen presents regularly at regional and national conferences, and reviews journal articles for several major journals such as Family Medicine and Academic Medicine. She is active in the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) and the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) and has been recognized by both organizations as an emerging scholar. She currently serves on the STFM Research Committee and the NAPCRG Research Advocacy Committee, and regularly reviews grant applications for both organizations, as well as other organizations such as the AAMC.

Dr. Nilsen's personal research focuses on health outcomes over the lifespan, especially for under-served and under-represented populations. She is also interested in the medical education system and how to improve educational outcomes. Her current personal projects include the exploration of issues affecting senior women physicians, issues in rural health, developing pathways to increase diversity in Family Medicine, tracking residency interviewing experiences, and LGBTQAI+ patient care. She is skilled in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, program evaluation, quality improvement, and grant writing.
